Psychological Injury Claims: A Growing Cost and Leadership Challenge

Psychological injury claims are rising across Australian workplaces, creating significant cost, compliance and leadership challenges for employers.

While these claims represent a smaller proportion of total workplace injuries, their impact is substantial. According to Safe Work Australia, psychological injuries account for around 12% of serious claims but result in significantly longer absences, averaging 34 weeks compared to seven weeks for physical injuries. They also carry higher compensation costs, placing pressure on both businesses and workers’ compensation systems.

At the same time, workplace dynamics are shifting. Employees are more aware of their rights; regulatory oversight is increasing and expectations around workplace experience continue to evolve. Many organisations are also experiencing lower attrition, meaning performance issues and interpersonal challenges remain within teams for longer periods.

For business leaders, this reinforces the need for strong human resource management and leadership capability. Expectations around conduct, performance and accountability must be clearly communicated, while maintaining psychologically safe workplaces.

Prevention is critical. Organisations that proactively manage psychosocial risk, through clear processes, early intervention and consistent leadership, are far better positioned to reduce claims, protect their people and maintain performance.

At Envisage HR Solutions, we support organisations through practical HR advisory, leadership support and WorkCover guidance, helping businesses manage risk early and maintain stable, high-performing teams.
